OUR HISTORY

The history of Familia Fernández Rivera began with the ingenuity of Alejandro Fernández and Esperanza Rivera, as well as the hard work and unity of a family. Together they created—according to Robert Parker—one of the best wines in the world. The group now boasts four wineries, a hotel and a team comprised of more than 120 people. Familia Fernández Rivera has known how to adapt to the times. At present, its wines and products are sold in more than 70 countries.

THE STONE WINERY

1972

With the money obtained from the sale of a patent, Alejandro Fernández and Esperanza Rivera bought a small, 16th-century stone winery. In 1972, the group began to produce its first wines using grapes grown on these lands.

TINTO PESQUERA

1975

Familia Fernández Rivera reaped its first harvest. The wine sold came to be called Tinto Pesquera. The name pays tribute to the hometown of Alejandro and Esperanza, Pesquera de Duero, which they have fond memories of.

D. O. RIBERA DEL DUERO

1982

Thanks to the wines made by Alejandro Fernández, the head of Familia Fernández Rivera, word began to spread about Ribera del Duero's potential; so much so that in 1982, the Designation of Origin Ribera del Duero was created.

THE BIRTH OF JANÚS

1982

In 1982, coinciding with the creation of the DO Ribera del Duero, Familia Fernández Rivera produced the first Janús Pesquera. It owes its name to the Roman god of time. Janús is only made with excellent vintages using grapes from Viña Alta, the highest vineyard of Tinto Pesquera.

ROBERT PARKER

1985

Robert Parker—considered one of the most influential wine critics worldwide—cemented the status of Tinto Pesquera, particularly its Janús, as one of the best wines in the world. Parker considered this wine the Pétrus of Spain.

CONDADO DE HAZA

1995

Another of Familia Fernández Rivera's most acclaimed projects was born: Condado de Haza. In 2008 and 2012, the prestigious magazine Wine Spectator included the Condado de Haza Crianza among its list of the ‘Top 100 Wines’ in the world.

DEHESA LA GRANJA

1998

In Vadillo de Guareña in Zamora, Familia Fernández Rivera modernised a winery that was three centuries old: Dehesa de la Granja. This estate also produces hard cheese, chickpeas and extra virgin olive oil.

EL VÍNCULO

1999

Familia Fernández Rivera built the El Vínculo winery in Campo de Criptana. Aside from Tempranillo, Airén—with which it produces one of the best white wines in the world—is also grown on El Vínculo.

HOTEL PESQUERA

2011

Familia Fernández Rivera diversified and opened the Hotel AF Pesquera. Located in Peñafiel, Ribera del Duero’s ‘Golden Mile’, this lovely complex is also focused on wine tourism.

THE GRANDDAUGHTERS

2019

The granddaughters of Esperanza and Alejandro took over the reins of this winemaking group. The third generation of Familia Fernández Rivera is now at the helm of a company that adapts to the times and continues to expand.
