"The Family"

OUR HISTORY

The history of Familia Fernández Rivera began over 50 years ago when Alejandro Fernández and Esperanza Rivera decided to make their dreams a reality. Their entrepreneurial souls and the unity of the family were the encouragement and driving force to become what they are today, a family company that has four wineries, a hotel, and a team of staff with over 120 people. With a clear philosophy, the love for wine and a passion for sharing it with the world, Familia Fernández Rivera has continued to dream and grow over these five decades, with its wines and products currently reaching over 70 countries.

1972

THE STONE WINERY

Thanks to the profits obtained from the sale of a patent, Alejandro Fernández and Esperanza Rivera bought a small, 16th-century stone winery. In 1972, the family began using it to produce their first wines with grapes from the family’s vineyards, showcasing the essence of their land in every bottle.

1975

TINTO PESQUERA

Familia Fernández Rivera put the first crop onto the market and, in an emotive tribute to Pesquera del Duero, the hometown of Alejandro and Esperanza, the wine they began selling was called Tinto Pesquera, a product that would soon become the flagship of Familia Fernández Rivera.

1982

D. O. RIBERA DEL DUERO

Thanks to the wines of Tinto Pesquera word began to spread about Ribera del Duero’s potential. In 1982 the Ribera del Duero Designation of Origin was officially recognised, a key milestone for history and Spanish winemaking culture.

1982

CREATION OF JANUS

Coinciding with the birth of the Ribera del Duero Designation of Origin, in 1982, Tinto Pesquera Janus was created, a wine that is only produced in excellent years and using grapes from the best Tinto Pesquera vineyards. Janus is the interpretation and greatest expression of the vineyard and tempranillo grape, an elegant, intense wine that lives long in the memory. Its name pays tribute to Janus, the god from Roman mythology who represents changes, passages, and transformations, thus symbolising the transformation of life and evolution.

1985

ROBERT PARKER

Robert Parker, one of the most influential wine critics worldwide, cemented the status of Tinto Pesquera, particularly its Janus, as one of the best wines in the world. Parker, who gave this wine a rating of 98 points, described it as the Petrus of Spain.

1994

CONDADO DE HAZA

1994 saw the first year of Condado de Haza, one of the most acclaimed projects by Familia Fernández Rivera. In 2008 and 2012, the prestigious magazine Wine Spectator included the Condado de Haza Crianza among its list of the ‘Top 100 Wines’ in the world.

1998

DEHESA DE LA GRANJA

Vadillo de Guareña, and more specifically, a winery with over three centuries of history, was the place chosen by Familia Fernández Rivera to house Dehesa La Granja, a very special project that connected the exciting world of wine with agriculture and livestock farming, combining oenology and gastronomy. In addition to very personal wines, Dehesa La Granja, also produces cured cheese, chickpeas and Extra Virgin olive oil.

1999

EL VÍNCULO

As a tribute to the union between the two Castiles of the Fernández Rivera family, in 1999 El Vínculo was created in Campo de Criptana, a winery whose mission was to create great wines in La Mancha. In addition to tempranillo, vineyards of Airén grapes are also grown in the region and some areas are “Viñas del país” (Vineyards of the Region), or in other words, pre-phylloxera vineyards, which have resulted in Alejairén, one of the most valued white wines of the region.

2011

HOTEL PESQUERA

Familia Fernández Rivera diversified and opened the Hotel AF Pesquera. Located in Peñafiel, the golden mile of the Ribera del Duero, this beautiful resort is also focused on wine tourism and is a faithful reflection of the hospitable essence that has always defined the family.

2019

THE GRANDDAUGTHERS, THE THIRD GENERATION

Rivera as the granddaughters of Esperanza and Alejandro took charge of the group, championing the values that have always defined the brand. Another example of the commitment to the evolution of the company and of the family commitment and passion.

2022

50TH ANNIVERSARY OF BODEGAS TINTO PESQUERA 2022

In 1972 Alejandro and Esperanza planted the first seeds of Tinto Pesquera, in the heart of the Ribera del Duero. Half a century later, the winery maintains its original essence, while always looking to the future. Thanks to effort and work, but also commitment and passion, this family winemaking project has been able to go from one generation to the next, adapting and growing over decades.
